How do you play softball second base on a batted ball? There are as many situations as there are things to do. By having an idea before it actually happens, players will not be frozen when the ball is hit. Often a coach or even a parent will yell out where to throw the ball after it is hit. With this information, the second base player can study it and have a reference when they are in the situation.
It is not likely that a new player at second will remember all of the potential plays. But it will give them something to use as a reference. When to cover first base for example is critical information to have when there is a runner at first and there is potential for a bunt.
This list with diagrams that I have compiled of what to do will help visualize the plays. Along with the list, I have provided a pdf version that can be download and handed out to players or sent to them in digital format. Hit the button to get a pdf and print this off if you like.
